Following a move across the Tasman in 2009, Jojo moved into agriculture and is now the Program Manager – RD&E at The Australian Egg Corporation Limited (AECL).
Topic: Improving hen welfare – AECL’s Hen Welfare RD&E Strategy
AECL invests in research, development and extension (RD&E) on behalf of egg farmers, the community and the government. AECL prioritises R&D into four major programs to more effectively focus support for the benefit of the industry.
A strong focus of AECL’s RD&E program is in the area of hen welfare. AECL is proud to have developed the Hen Welfare RD&E Plan in close collaboration with a broad range of stakeholders including egg producers, animal advocacy organisations, State and Federal Government regulators, and scientists. The Plan helps to: guide and prioritise RD&E investments over the next 5-8 years for the Australian egg industry; ensure research outcomes inform a review of the 4th edition of the Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals – Domestic Poultry to develop agreed Standards and Guidelines; and continuously enhance on-farm and animal husbandry skills in all layer farming systems to improve hen welfare.
